The red rock formations that surround Sedona have a lot to do with why people choose to come to this lovely destination.
The rock formations and cliffs are dark red in color and are incredibly beautiful!
When the sunlight hits them they light up bright red and it’s really something to see.
Just south of Sedona in a town called Cottonwood, is a western town replica called The Blazing M Ranch.
At this ranch you feel as if you walked back in time to the days of the old west.
They have all kinds of things to do there including roping lessons, horseshoes, an old west museum, sharp shooting, an incredibly good western show, and a full buffet dinner which was quite tasty!
The next day we took a tour with an excellent company called Red Rock Jeep Tours.
Our drivers name was Paul and he was very nice and extremely informative about the history of the area.
Red Rock Jeep offered 6 tours including one that went up to the top of the rim around 2000 feet.
Another offered panoramic views of the west Sedona area, and another took you out to an old settler’s camp they called Canyons and Cowboys!
If you like history at all, you will love these tours!
They run the tours every day from sun-up to sundown.
You can go up to the top of the rim to Flagstaff where it’s about 15 degrees cooler and there’s lots more to do.
There are balloon rides, and helicopter rides that take you over west Sedona where in the canyons you will see ancient Indian ruins from the Sinagua Indians.
The Sinagua Indians lived there about 550 years ago.
Some people called the Sinagua the Cliff Dwellers because they built their shelters in the side of the cliffs.
It’s really interesting to see!
General George Crook considered by some to be America greatest Indian fighter, was stationed in Arizona to resolve the problems with the Apache Indians who felt the whites were encroaching upon their sacred land in the surrounding Sedona area.
There were 16 to 20 different Indian tribes in the area and some were at war with others, but they all agreed that Sedona was a sacred place and they never made war with each other there.
The tribes all agreed that Sedona was the birthplace of all life on earth mainly due to the unique and magnificent red stone displayed in the towering cliffs.
The Apache respected General Crook because he was a very hard fighter and also because he always spoke the truth. It is said that he would not force any conflict but instead preferred negotiation if possible.
But when General Crook did have to fight, he would hire Indian scouts from other tribes and set up ambushes on the trail that led to the only perineal water source in the area called the Seven Sacred Pools.
There was always water in the pools which was the water source for the Apache and the water also would draw game which made for good hunting. (and also a good ambush area)
So with the ambushes he set, General Crook always had higher ground and eventually was successful and prevailed in his assignment in the area.
By the early to mid 1870’s the General had brokered a deal which put all the Apache on reservations and calmed the area and opened it for future settlement.
So those are just some of the many things to do in Sedona AZ!
You should visit, it’s a beautiful place!
